This is certainly a dual purpose beet. Lovely round roots for pickling and brilliant dark purple leaves to cut for salad mixes. Can be used for sprouting as well.

Tip: We sow all of our beets in flats in a free draining soil mixture mid April. We plant out the transplants mid May while the soil is cool and moist to grow on for roots. It can be difficult planting out seeds in the bare soil, our spring weather has been hot and dry the past couple of years. Transplants make it simple and easy. Mulch with straw after transplanting, this will help to moderate the soil temperature and reduce watering in hot weather.
