Milk Thistle

Silybum marianum is a species annual or biennial that has bright purple flowers and pale green shiny leaves with white veins.
The medicinal part is in the seeds and has been used to detoxify and repair the liver. The whole plant is edible....the leaves, seeds and roots. A tea can be made from the leaves all summer and the roots can be dried like dandelion root to store for winter use.
The plant has been used in monastery gardens since ancient times.
Very easy to start. Needs light to germinate therefore cover very slightly with seed starting mix.
Start seed in March or April to flower in summer, and May to August to flower the following year. Zone 7
