Northern Olive-seeds

Family: Oleaceae

This is "Chionanthus virginicus".

This is an olive substitute because the Italian variety is not hardy here in Ontario and many other provinces.

Fruit starts to mature in August which qualifies as an early crop in most gardens.

A bee and pollinator magnet in spring and a beautiful landscape plant. Grows to approx. 12 feet. A very underrated species.

This is the North American version and the fruit can be pickled like olives. More chefs should use this. The Native Americans used the roots as a disinfectant.

Prefers moist soil and can take seasonal flooding. Tolerates clay soil and air pollution. It doesn't get any better than that folks!
