Kiwi-Hardy Northern Strain

This hardy perennial vine can be found naturally growing in northern Korea, Russia and Japan. This variety has been commercially cultivated for fruit and leaf production. Can be used as a famine food. Very hardy down to -40F. The sweet fruits are the size of large grapes.

Hardy Kiwi have both female and male plants. One male to every 3 female plants will produce adequate amounts of fruit. 

The fruits are high in vitamin C and minerals. The leaves are edible and in Korea are called Darae-sun and consumed as a Namul vegetable. 

In Russia, the fruit is sold in farmers markets as a seasonal fruit called "Kishmish".

Tip: Sow seeds in a moist soil-less seed mixture and stratify for 3 months. Grow seedlings until they are large enough for the garden. The garden soil must be free-draining with seasonal rains. Heavy soils do not favour kiwi culture. Experience is required.
